Five Ways to Rekindle Your Passion for Marketing
By: GAIL MARTIN

If you’re confused on how the words ‘passion’ and ‘marketing’ ended up in the same sentence, read on. This article is especially for you.

Long ago, something moved you to go into your profession or open your business. Do you remember what it was? For most people, a sense of deep interest, a desire to provide an excellent product or service, or a dream to change the world set them on the course to their current business. But along the way, it’s easy to become so mired in the everyday details that the passion slips away. We can get so tied up with worries and tasks that we forget the big picture that inspired us to go into our business.

Losing touch with the passion for your business leads to ineffective marketing. In order to effectively promote your company or service, you must believe in it more than anyone else. You must believe passionately in order to make others passionate. If that spark of energy is missing, your message becomes lackluster, your sales pitch becomes uninspiring and you lose the drive to tell others about your business.

Here are five ways to rekindle your passion for your business and infuse your marketing with that original spark.

Remember your beginnings. What originally drove you to open your business? Take time over a cup of tea or coffee to sit quietly with yourself and remember. Were you fascinated by the technology? Driven to do a better job than the current standard? Excited about a chance to make a difference? Think about your original goals and dreams.

Reflect on your successes. Maybe your dreams were harder to accomplish than you first thought. Perhaps your hope of setting a new industry standard or making the world a better place haven’t fallen into place as quickly as you hoped. That’s OK. What you now have is experience. Over another cup of coffee, take about 15 minutes to jot down your biggest successes. These aren’t necessarily measured by dollars or by the opinion of the outside world. What have you achieved that makes you proud? What have you accomplished that would have made your younger self proud?

Rethink your current goals. Sometimes we lose the passion for what we are currently doing because we have set such huge goals for ourselves that we never feel satisfied with our progress. If that’s the case for you, try to break your big goals into smaller milestones. That way you can feel a sense of accomplishment at each step along the way. Reaching goals and celebrating milestones does wonders to spark your passion.

Refocus your marketing mindset. Is your current marketing all about meeting the numbers? Is it you-focused instead of customer-focused? If you’ve slipped into thinking only about marketing as a means to meet budget goals, set aside another fifteen minute time to think about your product from the customer’s point of view. What problem do you solve for your customer? How do you make his or her life better? Re-read some customer testimonials, or start asking customers for feedback. Realizing that you have significantly helped someone else is a great way to rekindle your passion.

Reframe your marketing role. In the early days, you probably had customer contact every day. You heard their initial problems, you explained how your product or service could make their lives better, and you saw the results first-hand. As businesses grow, owners often lose that front-line contact. Remember that you are your company’s best chief marketer. If you are on fire with passion in the sincere belief that your product or service changes the world in a better way, your passion will be contagious. You will inspire your sales force, your customer service representatives, your production staff and your prospects. Your marketing message will reflect your passion, and will become irresistible.

Sincerity and passion are an unstoppable marketing mix. When you rekindle your passion for your business, you light a bonfire that draws prospects far and wide. Others will become excited by your passion, and they will help you spread the word. You’ll develop marketing messages rooted in your passion that are customer-focused, benefit-centric—focused on how you make others’ lives better. Best of all, you’ll break out of the marketing blahs and the me-too marketing that makes everything fade to gray. Paint your marketing with the vibrant colors of your business passion and get ready for exciting things to happen!
