Is MLM a busted flush?
Many people both online and offline have asked whether MLM programs are a 'busted flush' or the future for small businesses. Well, traditional 'bricks and mortar' businesses are becoming increasingly more expensive to establish and run. Once set up they occupy an enormous amount of time, effort and even more cash. Just when you think you are about to make a breakthrough, the nearest supermarket/hypermarket or Mall decides to sell the goods you were selling for half the price and your new business collapses. You are left with huge losses and most likely a lease you cannot afford to upkeep. Various economists predict that around 90% of offline businesses fail in their first 3 years and this figure is getting worse. Well guess what? The stats do not vary that greatly for online businesses either. However, there are some notable differences. Generally, online businesses cost less to establish, they are more flexible and should they fail you simply cancel your site. However, if you are selling products on line, you may still be left with large inventories and their associated costs. MLM businesses, in the main, are the lowest cost businesses to run. With one or two exceptions, with little or no inventory, they provide a lower and more manageable risk to the entrepreneur. In addition, they offer enormous leverage potential as the result of the business owner being rewarded through the efforts of others with no staff wages or associated costs to pay. Yes, they have their problems. Not everyone who joins you will be productive or successful. There is a large 'drop-out' rate. Some MLM companies are now way past their maturity stage. But despite this, for those entrepreneurs who are willing to invest, recruit and motivate their downlines and, wait for it, take a 3-5 year view, MLM programs can offer some of the best business opportunities available today. 2007 has also seen the introduction of 'no need to recruit' downline businesses (as the company will do this for you). A word of caution, there are a number of scams out there, but there are also some legitimate programs that offer this. But, be warned, it is highly unlikely that you will earn a significant income unless you do recruit and encourage others to do likewise. My brief analysis suggests that MLM's are still here to stay for some time and that there are programs worth joining (when unemployment rises more people move into self-employment and this cycle will continue). The risk factors of failure are just as high as other businesses but the cost of failure is generally much lower. MLM programs, should be vetted closely and not undertaken lightly. However, they do offer a tremendous opportunity for the online entrepreneur to learn a wide range of skills and, through the efforts of others, earn a significant income.
