Liver Gone Bad
Like other widely-known human organs such as the heart, brain, lungs, and kidneys, the liver is also commonly associated with diseases that lead to numerous human mortalities. However, unlike its previously mentioned counterparts, anomalies within the liver are not as obvious. When problems occur involving the heart, heart attacks are usually experienced or, if minimally, pains in the chest area. Problems in the brain are usually felt through headaches and paralysis of certain body parts. There is difficulty breathing and frequent coughing occur when diseases attack the lung area. Anomalies within the kidneys manifest as difficulty and pain in urinating. However, when the liver is involved, it is only when the problem is in its serious stages or during when it is already hard to treat that symptoms are felt. Common symptoms of liver disease include jaundice or the yellowish discoloration of the skin and whites of the eyes, liver enlargement, portal hypertension, hepatic encephalopathy, and ascites or the accumulation of the fluid in the abdominal area. Sometimes, other symptoms of liver problems or diseases are very non-specific and not that obvious that it can be mistaken as symptoms of other health problems when not properly evaluated and tested by medical professionals. These vague symptoms of liver malfunction include fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss, and general feeling of unwellness. Aside from its concerns not being too obvious, the importance and functions of the liver are also not as emphasized as its other counterparts. The heart is widely-known as the main organ for circulation, the brain as the main organ for neurological control, the lungs being important in respiration, and the kidneys for elimination of waste by-products. Not many are familiar with the role of the liver and its importance in the entire human functioning. This can be attributed as one of the reasons why it is not very much appreciated and often taken for granted. Possibly only a small part of the population is aware of the functions that the liver does for digestion, regulation of blood-content, and regulation of harmful substances in the body. When the liver starts the breakdown, as expected in a system that functions in synchrony, other organs or parts will also be affected. There are internal and external factors that cause damages to the liver. Among the internal factors include genetics where a person can have a disorder related to the liver functioning that he or she has inherited, and autoimmunity where a person's own immune system attacks the organs that lead to their malfunctioning. On the other hand, there are also several external factors that can harm the liver such as viruses, drugs, poisons, and excessive alcohol. When any of these organisms or substances enter the system through infection or ingestion, they will come in contact with the liver resulting to possible harm or negative consequences. An example of this is when the liver regulates the metabolism of certain drugs which produces metabolites that are dangerously toxic for the system. Another example is when constant metabolism of excessive alcohol ingested by a person creates cirrhosis in the liver. Finally, hepatitis which is described as the inflammation of the liver, and possibly the most common liver disease, is caused by viruses that belong to external factors. Though liver can possibly be one of the least understood organs of the body, liver diseases are far from the easiest to deal with. Once a person experiences having liver problems, he or she must already be careful with everything that she ingests or take in such as with food, drinks, and medications. Liver disease can also lead to other problems such as diabetes and kidney problems. Liver is also one of the organs that has the least chances for regeneration, thus, any initial problems can already be a lifetime concern for an individual. Like in other health concerns, it is better to avoid possible problems that might affect the liver rather than deal with possible treatments for liver diseases later on. In addition, liver diseases are so complex since in this case medications that are supposed treatments for health problems become possible threats for further complications. Future campaigns, projects, or even simple activities that talk about greater awareness of the importance of the liver and the dangers of its diseases will surely help in greater appreciation of this organ and early prevention of common liver diseases.
