The standard argument by direct marketers, copywriters, and anyone using persuasion is that there are only two ways to motivate someone. People pull out their wallets to buy from you or take the action you want to either acquire pleasure, or avoid pain.

You can tell them of the joy they’ll receive for joining your business, or you can remind them of the continued grey clouds they’ll have for NOT. What most will tell you is that the pain is the stronger motivator. Remind people of how bad things may suck, and you’ll get better results.

For example, you could have a headline of your sales letter that reads, “Join My Team In My Business and I’ll Show You How You Can Turn Your Annual Income Into Your Monthly Income Quickly!”

Or you could brush their pain…

You could write “If You’re Ready to Escape the 9-to-5 Monotony and Living Paycheck to Paycheck, My Team Will Show You Exactly How Step By Step.”

Is this a cruel or unfair idea? Maybe.

Joe Vitale, in his book “Hypnotic Writing”, questions the morale of using this type of persuasion. He says, “I don’t want to add to the pain the world. People get more of whatever they focus on, so I don’t even want to mention their pain.”

He then says that gently mentioning the pain people are in might be a wise thing from time to time, as long as it comes from a place of love.

So which motivator is better to get people to join your business opportunity? And what will it mean for you in the long run?

From my experience, if you want to see long term results with your home business, use love and compassion with your prospects. It may sound touchy, but I agree with Vitale when he writes, “love isn’t an emotion but a mind-set. As a mind-set, it is stronger than any emotion.”

Love could be the most powerful motivator of all time, and most marketers may have overlooked that.

You may not get as many people to click on your link, opt-in to your capture page, or visit your websites, but you’ll get people who are a better match. Higher quality will give you higher results and long-term growth in your business.
