Many UK businesses and organisations already recognise the benefits of the transferable skills that Reserve training and service instil in their employee, with 95 agreeing that Reservists are an asset to the workforce.
The quality and breadth of training Reservists receive is on a parallel to that received by their Regular counterparts. The development of key attributes such as resourcefulness, perseverance and improvisation, as well as loyalty, reliability and integrity, makes them effective, fully prepared members of the Reserve Forces and valuable, productive employees.
Leadership training one of key benefits for employers
Training and serving as a Reservist develops a whole range of skills and qualities that can be of direct relevance to the workplace. These skill sets range from core attributes – such as teamwork, leadership and self-confidence – to practical knowledge of subjects such as first aid, health and safety, and IT. In addition, a great emphasis is placed on working in field conditions, i.e. outside the training centre’s comfort zone, which gives recruits useful experience of coping in realistic and challenging situations.
The Armed Forces firmly believes that team building exercises and adventurous activities such as climbing and white-water rafting are central to building character as well as improving fitness. They also teach Reservists how to work effectively within a team, communicate, solve problems, present ideas and organise events.
How companies can lend their support
In order to add maximum value in the workplace it is important that Reservists are given as much chance as possible to take advantage of training opportunities and to fulfil their obligations. Employers can greatly contribute to this by offering flexible working hours or even paid time off. This level of support is not only appreciated by the employee, but rewarded through the enhanced transferable skills gained during the training.
The best way for companies to demonstrate their support, however, is to have policies and procedures in place for managing Reservist employees. Becoming an officially recognised Supportive Employer will also send a clear, positive message to both existing and prospective employees.
