What Does Web 2.0 Have to Do with Games
By James Broadfoot It's kind of funny when something that starts out as kidstuff explodes into a multi-billion, yes, billion dollar market. Sites such as My Space, FaceBook, You tube are truly defining that which is contagious. It hardly seems appropriate to even call them sites. I guess they could be deemed SuperSites, considering that their combined viewings and hits number well in to the billions. Multiples greater than the entire world population. So why the excitement, what does it mean? They're all free, right? Sure for the casual user, but marketers are quickly catching on that this is where the exposure is and is going to be for a while. I could go on and on about the ratios and extrapilations of ad dollars spent for product awareness, ad budget vs. sales, non-trackable campaigns, or just bar stool fodder about the cost of a Superbowl ad. Apparently some masterminds over in the U.K. are just as aware of these phenomena as Serje and Larry or even Bill himself. They have introduced a game platform that combines games, social networking, and this web 2.0 technology. In other words it allows users to play friends, internet friends, strangers, etc. while networking on a platform that generating billions. Could this be the perfect utopian formula that has elluded marketers throughout modern history. By my analysis the model comes up win-win. Marketers will follow this very interesting trend in time I'm sure. So much exposure will be hard to ignore forever.
